Sunday

Spent the day at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.  There had been some rain lately and the wildflowers were blooming.  There are springs in Borrego and lots of grapefruit orchards scattered in the desert.  The drive to Fonts Point was through only 4 miles but there is no road - you drive along a wash.  At the end is a huge surprise - the earth drops straight into a California Grand Canyon!

Monday

Really full day!  Started out at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.  It's on Point Loma and there is ocean on both sides of the site.  Beautiful and very peaceful - there are 96,000 internments there.  A cemetery was going on with a bagpiper.  From there we went to Carbrillo National Monument with wonderful vistas of San Diego, the naval base, and the ocean.  There is an old lighthouse there that we visited - it was replaced by a more modern version but is still open to visitors.  Then to La Jolla where seals haul out right on the beach in the heart of the city.  Lots of moms and pups!  Last stop was Torrey Pines airport, a popular launch site for paragliders and hang gliders.  The winds were perfect so we say lots of folks sailing over the cliffs.

Tuesday

Had a nice "girl chat" morning and then went to meet Sharon's mother and have lunch.  From there went to the Birch Aquarium at Scripps where Sharon is a volunteer.  It's always amazing to me to see the tremendous diversity of the underwater life so foreign to we Midwesterners. While the aquarium is small, it has some amazing specimens and the exhibits are laid out reall well.  We spent quite a bit of time there and were treated to seeing the sea hare very active.

The tide pool where              volunteers like Sharon tell you about the critters in the tanks and allow you to touch them.

The brown "lump" in the middle is a sea hare. The two white tipped "ears" at the bottom right are actually his eye stalks. Sharon hand fed him some sea lettuce.  His skin is almost velvety feeling.

Scripps Institute of Oceanography is below where the Aquarium sits.

There are great Gray whale sculptures at the entrance

The kelp bed exhibit takes up a huge wall and is teeming with fish.
