Wednesday, July 3

The town of Petersburg really goes all out for their Fourth of July celebration - a day full of activities for all ages!  The kids all get together to decorate their bikes and there are street vendors of all types and for all causes. You can get shrimp cocktail, Korean beef, ribs, chicken, hot dogs, pie, and fried bread, to name a few of the local delicacies.  There were raffles of all kinds and the big town raffle had over 110 prizes!

The parade goes down the two blocks of Main Street and then goes around the block and starts again - kind of an instant replay!  The theme of the parade this year was Uncle Salmon and the pictures show how creatively it was presented.  It would appear that all 3000 folks who live here showed up to celebrate.  It was a great parade and everyone was in great spirits.

Adam arrived in time for lunch - it was a wonderful reunion and we spend the afternoon exploring.  When Sharon and Pal pulled up this afternoon we all flew into each others arms - it was so wonderful to have dear friends all together again.   Along with our new friends Pat and Kent,  we dined al fresco at Tina's Place before heading out to explore the docks and take a first peek at the Alaska Adventurer.

Although it was raining, Donna and I hiked up toward the athletic field to watch the fireworks show.  We ultimately took shelter under the overhang of a camper to stay dry.  Since the whole town is only a few blocks long, it was a quick hike back to the Scandia.

The Coast Guard Honor
Guard led off the parade.

Hoopie Davidson is the school bus
driver and teaches driver's ed.

There were a couple of
electric cars in the parade.

Reminded me of my Toby -
howled at other dogs along the route.

This guy was leading the
"Future Processors" entourage -
the canner is the main business in town.

Loved the salmon tail!

King salmon is, well, king!

Lady Liberty had a salmon torch
and a salmon tail under her gown.

This is traditional Tlingit garb
but the dogs were wearing
Harley Davidson jackets!

More future processers...

A popular "restaurant", Tina's Place,
is right next door to the Scandia,

The kids loved the face painting.

You gotta love ribs cooked
by Uncle Sam.

The fishing fleet was
in for the holiday.

Cool underwater wildlife,

The Alaska Adventurer
